What kind of qualifications are involved in joining the United States Marshals Service?
In researching this first question I have found there to be many different qualifications that must be met to become a US Marshal. First and foremost to even apply for the job you must be a US citizen between the ages of 21 and 37. USMS applicants must also in excellent physical condition to endure the rigorous boot camp like training that is sustained. There is also a schooling and experience requirement that consists of a bachelor's degree, three years of responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of the two. An extremely difficult written test is then taken to prove that the applicant has the necessary knowledge to become a marshal. If the test is passed then it is followed by an oral interview conducted by the USMS. You must also permit an extensive background investigation upon yourself, directed by the USMS. If accepted to the academy applicants will undergo a 16-week basic training program at the USMS training academy in Glynco, GA. Here they will have to meet the medical qualifications of extensive bloodtests, urinalysis, and an EKG's. Vision and hearing tests are also conducted by the USMS. Vision must be 20/200 uncorrected, or 20/20 corrected to pass the test. Hearing must be 30 decibels or greater in each ear at 500, 1000, and 2000 hertz. The physical conditioning of applicants consists of flexibility, pushups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run. All of these qualifications must be met or bettered by applicants to get into the USMS.
What kind of benifits do Marshals and Deputy Marshals recieve?
Annual leave is awarded by hours in relation to years on the job. There are 3 categories of leave in the USMS. The first is less than 3 years experience, where you can be awarded anywhere from 4 to 104 hours of leave. Second is 3-15 years experience, where you could be awarded anywhere from 6 to 160 hours of leave. Third is more than 15 years of experience where you could earn anywhere from 8 to 208 hours of leave.
Sick leave is a little different from annual leave. Here it is the same for every employee. You are awarded 4 hrs of sick leave for every pay period. The health benefits for the USMS are optional for everyone. If the employee decides to take advantage of these benefits, the cost is shared between the employee and the federal government. There are also specialized retirement benefits for DUSM's, that include a personal plan, social security, and a thrift savings plan.
What is the general job discription of a Deputy US. Marshal?
The United States Marshals have jurisdiction in all cases involving escape prisoners, probation, parole, and bond violators. They are responsible for returning escaped felons in the United States, and also in other countries of the world. The Marshals Service is responsible for providing protection for court officials, witnesses, and jurors. The USMS is the government agency that provides the renowned witness relocation program to those who have testified against organized crime, drug traffickers, and other major criminals. These witnesses are provided with a new identity and home, they are only allowed to take their immediate family with them. They are also responsible for the transportation and incarceration of all federal prisoners up to and until their trials.
The US Marshals Service also has a highly trained special operations group or SOG, as they like to call it. These are deputy marshals that have volunteered to be on 24-hour call, and undergo extensive training in tactics and weaponry. Missions that are undertaken by the SOG include fugitive seizure, transporting high-profile prisoners, witness protection, and many other assignments as well. The SOG is considered the elite of the United States Marshals Service.
